Antelope Canyon, near Page, Arizona, sits on Navajo land, and you cannot visit on your own. Every visitor enters with an authorized Navajo guide on a booked tour, no exceptions, no walk-ups guaranteed. Prime dates and midday slots sell out days to weeks ahead in spring, summer, and fall. So the real planning question isn't whether to book a tour, it's which canyon, which time slot, and how far ahead. This guide answers all three.

Upper Antelope Canyon

• Famous for: the vertical light beams that pour through the ceiling openings on sunny late-spring and summer middays.
• The walk: flat, sandy, at ground level: about 100 yards of canyon, the easiest walking of the two. Tours typically drive you to the entrance in an off-road vehicle from Page.
• Crowds & cost: the most popular and usually the most expensive option; groups move through in a managed flow.
• Best for: first-timers, photographers chasing the beams, anyone with limited mobility.

Lower Antelope Canyon

• Famous for: twisting "corkscrew" walls, ladders, and colors that shift from orange to purple as you descend.
• The walk: longer (about 1.1 km through the canyon), with steep staircases and ladders at entry and exit; narrower in places. Not suitable for anyone uncomfortable with stairs.
• Crowds & cost: usually slightly cheaper and a touch less crowded than Upper; no light beams, but many photographers prefer its shapes and light play all day long.
• Best for: active visitors, repeat visitors, and anyone whose Upper slot already sold out.

Verdict: Chasing the classic beam photo between roughly April and September? Book Upper at a midday slot (around 10 a.m.–1 p.m.). Visiting in winter, hate crowds, or like a bit of adventure? Lower is the better experience per dollar. Have two days in Page? Do both. They're genuinely different.

• Book ahead: Midday Upper slots in season go first: reserve as soon as your Page dates are set, and treat "sold out" as real.
• Fees stack: In addition to the tour price, expect a per-person Navajo permit fee, often collected separately or in cash. Check what's included before you compare prices between operators.
• Cancellation policies are strict: Many Antelope tours are non-refundable or have narrow change windows. Read the policy before you pay.
• Weather can close the canyon: Flash-flood risk shuts tours during monsoon storms (mainly July–September afternoons), refunds/reschedules follow the operator's policy, another reason to book with a reputable one.
• What's banned inside: No bags or backpacks, no tripods/monopods/selfie sticks on standard tours, no food or drink beyond a bottle of water. Travel light.
• Time zone trap: Page does not observe daylight saving time, but the surrounding Navajo Nation does. Tour operators confirm times carefully, double-check which time your confirmation means and arrive early anyway.

Horseshoe Bend, where the Colorado River wraps around a 1,000-foot cliff in a perfect U, is about 5 miles south of Page on US 89 and pairs naturally with any Antelope tour. Unlike the canyon, it's self-guided: park in the city-run lot (there's a parking fee) and walk the roughly 1.5-mile round-trip trail to the fenced overlook. There's no shade and no water. Go at sunrise or sunset for the best light and tolerable temperatures, and bring more water than you think.
