Phoenix Sky Harbor is one of America's biggest and easiest airports: two main terminals (3 and 4, there is no Terminal 1 or 2 anymore), a free automated PHX Sky Train connecting terminals, parking, and the Rental Car Center, and a location so central it's minutes from downtown Phoenix and about 20–25 minutes from Scottsdale. • Staying put in Scottsdale/Phoenix for 2–3 days? You can skip the car. Base in Old Town Scottsdale or downtown Phoenix, use rideshares for the scattered sights, and take the Valley Metro light rail between downtown Phoenix, Tempe, and the airport corridor. You'll spend less than a rental + hotel parking fees, many Valley resorts charge nightly parking, so check before assuming the car is "free" once rented.
• Going to Sedona, the Grand Canyon, or anywhere beyond the Valley? Rent the car. There is no practical public transit to northern Arizona; your alternatives are guided day tours (great for the Grand Canyon, see our tours-from-Phoenix comparison) or the rental. For any road trip, the rental wins easily.
• Middle case: one big day trip: Compare one day-tour ticket per person vs. a single day's rental. For two people heading to the canyon and back the same day, the guided tour is often the smarter buy once gas, park entry, and 8 hours of driving are counted.

All the major rental companies operate from a single Rental Car Center west of the terminals. From either terminal, follow signs to the PHX Sky Train, the free ride to the Rental Car Center takes a few minutes and runs around the clock. Pickup lines peak with the late-morning flight banks and during spring training season (late February–March) and major events; booking ahead is essential then, and it's when pre-check-in with your rental company pays for itself.

• Book early for peak dates: Spring training, the Phoenix Open, and holiday weekends squeeze PHX rental supply hard. Rates behave like airline prices. They climb as the fleet empties.
• Compare the total: Airport rentals carry facility fees and taxes that can surprise. Sometimes an off-airport location in Scottsdale or Tempe is cheaper, but you'll need a ride there, which eats the savings for short rentals. Run both numbers.
• Car choice for Arizona: Standard cars handle every paved road in our itineraries, including Sedona and the South Rim. Choose comfort, trunk space, and good A/C over clearance; you do not need an SUV for this state unless you're chasing unpaved trailheads.
• Sun & heat basics: Never leave anything meltable (or alive) in a parked Arizona car, and keep water in the vehicle on any drive out of the Valley.

• PHX Sky Train: Free, connects Terminals 3 and 4, the Rental Car Center, and the 44th Street light rail station.
• Valley Metro Rail: From the 44th Street station, trains run through downtown Phoenix to Tempe and Mesa, the cheapest ride into the city, and genuinely useful for downtown hotels and Arizona State events.
• Rideshare & taxis: Designated pickup areas at both terminals; rideshare surge pricing spikes after big flight banks and events, so a few minutes' patience can pay.

If you're staying in Mesa, Gilbert, or the East Valley, or flying a budget carrier, check Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in east Mesa. It's a smaller, simpler airport served mainly by low-cost airlines, and fares there can undercut PHX substantially on the routes it serves. The trade-off: far fewer destinations, and it's about 35–45 minutes from Scottsdale and the canyon-bound freeways.
