TUCSON

Tucson sits about 115 miles (just under 2 hours) southeast of Phoenix on I-10, ringed by five mountain ranges and the densest saguaro forests on earth. Where Phoenix/Scottsdale does polish and resorts, Tucson does character: a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, a major university, centuries of Spanish and Mexican heritage, and a slower, quirkier desert vibe. A weekend here stands alone, or pairs perfectly as the southern bookend of a longer Arizona road trip.

The park comes in two pieces separated by the city, and each has its own personality:

• West (Tucson Mountain District): The denser, more photogenic saguaro forest, plus the scenic Bajada Loop Drive (unpaved but fine for regular cars) and Signal Mountain's petroglyphs. Pair it with the Desert Museum and Old Tucson nearby, this is most visitors' best day.
• East (Rincon Mountain District): Older, larger saguaros, the 8-mile Cactus Forest Loop Drive, and better backcountry hiking at the foot of the Rincons. Quieter than the west side.

Entry is a per-vehicle park pass (an America the Beautiful pass works), check nps.gov for current fees. Strategy: do the west district plus the Desert Museum on Day 1, and give the east district a sunrise visit on Day 2 before it warms up. Saguaro sunsets are a headline act; the west district's Gates Pass overlook, just outside the park, is the classic spot.

Despite the name, the Desert Museum, west of the city, next to the park's west district, is mostly outdoors: part zoo, part botanical garden, with desert animals in naturalistic enclosures, an aviary you walk through, and mountain lion and prairie dog exhibits that delight kids and adults alike. It's routinely ranked among the best museums in America and it's the single best half-day in Tucson. Go at opening to see animals active and beat the heat, then continue into Saguaro West while you're already there.

Mission San Xavier del Bac

Ten miles south of downtown, this brilliant white 18th-century Spanish mission, the "White Dove of the Desert", rises out of the Santa Cruz valley, still an active parish on the Tohono O'odham Nation. The interior murals and ongoing restoration work are remarkable. Go in the morning; on weekends, Native food vendors outside sell fry bread and burros that make a perfect early lunch.

Mt. Lemmon Scenic Byway

In about an hour, the Catalina Highway climbs from saguaros at the base to pine forest and the little town of Summerhaven at 8,000+ feet, every 1,000 feet of elevation roughly equals driving 300 miles north in climate terms. It's Tucson's summer escape and a top scenic drive any season, with the Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley sky ride at the top.

Eat like it matters (it does here)

Tucson was the first US city named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, and the title is earned daily. The mandatory list: a Sonoran hot dog (bacon-wrapped, piled high, El Güero Canelo is the famous name), a chimichanga or carne asada at a family-run Mexican institution, and dinner in the downtown/4th Avenue corridor where the city's food scene concentrates. The barrio bakeries and tortillerias aren't attractions on the way to the trip, for many visitors they become the trip.

• Downtown/4th Avenue: Best for food, evenings out, and the streetcar corridor; historic hotels and good boutique options.
• Foothills (north/east): The resort belt: big desert resorts with mountain views, golf, and spas, a short drive from Sabino Canyon (another essential stop: a desert canyon with a tram road and creek, excellent at sunrise).
• West side: Puts you next to the Desert Museum and Saguaro West; quieter, fewer restaurants.
• Getting there: Fly into Tucson (TUS) for a Tucson-only trip, or drive from Phoenix (under 2 hours) as part of a loop, rental car required either way; Tucson is a driving city.
• When: October–April is prime. Summer is hot but the Mt. Lemmon escape and monsoon drama make it workable, and hotel rates drop hard.
